How do you teach reading to young students? We use a combination of phonics, sight word, and whole language techniqes depending on the type of learner. A 'Total Reading' concept utilizes reading skills throughout the entire curricuum Reading skills are not taught in just a separte part of the child's day, but occur throughout the day in all areas of the curriculum. Additionally, the student's interests and 'writing to read' techniques lead the student into reading and skill development. The youngest student begins with the Montessori movebable alphabet forming words until he reaches the 'developmental' stage of 'decoding' words. By giving the young child the skills and sounds needed through a variety of pre-reading materials he will 'explode' into reading when he has met that stage of development. We know that children reach this stage at varying ages. We, also, know that students need teaching methods and techniques that relate to their particular learning style.
